Nestling at the foot of the Galloway hills, Newton Stewart is located in the Wigtownshire region of Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland, just 25 miles from the Scotland-Northern Ireland ferry port of Stranraer.

Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, peace and tranquility, Newton Stewart is the perfect base for our stay in South West Scotland.

Newton Stewart lies at a cross-roads on the banks of the River Cree at the heart of Galloway in south-west Scotland.

Here, the east-west route between England and Ireland (A75 / Euro-route E13) meets the north-south route (A714) from the Machars, Wigtown and Whithorn, to the rest of Scotland.

The Galloway Hills & Forest Parks

Newton Stewart has long been a favourite base for walkers and almost the whole of the countryside; mountain, forest and moorland, is accessible. There are numerous guides to walking in southern Scotland, many of which are available from local shops or the Tourist Information Centre.

The region also abounds with excellent biking roads, mixing A, B and even C class roads.

Time and energy permitting, the two local mountains, Cairnsmore of Fleet (2330ft / 711m) and The Merrick (2764ft / 843m) provide reasonably strenuous hill walking but either of them can make a good day's outing. On a clear day, views from the top can encompass four countries - England, Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

There are 24 named peaks above 2000 feet in this part of the Southern Uplands with unbeatable views of mountain scenery.
